10 lessons in this unit

Lesson 1

Why people work

Explain why people work (to earn money, meet needs, help others, use skills, feel proud), distinguish paid work from unpaid work at home and in the community, and recognise that all honest work has value.

Lesson 2

Occupations

Name and describe a range of occupations (farmer, teacher, nurse, driver, builder, tailor, fisher, trader, engineer), match occupations to tools and skills, identify jobs that serve people, make or grow things, and explore different careers without gender stereotypes.

Lesson 3

Goods and services

Distinguish goods (things we can touch, such as bread, shoes, books) from services (work done for others, such as teaching, driving, haircutting), give examples of each in the community, and explain that many businesses provide both.

Lesson 4

Producers

Explain that producers make, grow or provide goods and services, describe how raw materials become finished goods (cocoa to chocolate, cotton to cloth, cassava to gari), identify the steps in a simple production chain, and appreciate the work of producers.

Lesson 5

Consumers

Explain that consumers buy or use goods and services, distinguish between needs and wants when consuming, describe how consumers choose wisely (quality, price, safety), and explain how consumers can avoid waste.

Lesson 6

Farms and markets

Describe how food gets from farms to markets (harvest, sorting, packing, transport, selling), name roles (farmer, trader, buyer), explain why markets matter to communities, and describe how farmers and traders depend on each other.

Lesson 7

Transportation of goods

Describe how goods are transported (by road, rail, water and air), match transport to goods and distance (trucks, trains, boats, aeroplanes), explain why transport matters, and describe safe, careful ways to move goods.

Lesson 8

Needs and wants

Distinguish needs (food, water, shelter, clothing, health, safety, education) from wants (toys, sweets, games), sort examples, explain that needs come first, and recognise that families may have different wants and sometimes difficult choices.

Lesson 9

Choosing how to use resources

Explain that people choose how to use limited resources (money, time, materials, energy), identify trade-offs and opportunity cost in simple terms (what you give up), make a choice using criteria, and reflect on a choice.

Lesson 10

Appreciating different occupations

Appreciate the contribution of workers in the community by interviewing or meeting a worker (with a guest or video), identify how each occupation helps others, say thank-you in meaningful ways, and recognise dignity in all honest work.
