Why people use money

Lesson 2Recognising local currency
Recognise the local currency (the Leone in Sierra Leone, with notes and coins) and learn that other countries have their own currencies (the Ghanaian cedi, Nigerian naira, US dollar, euro), match amounts to notes and coins using pictures, and understand that money must be handled with care.
Lesson 3Buying and selling
Describe how buying and selling works (seller offers goods at a price; buyer pays money; both agree), act out simple purchases with play money, count change in small amounts, and use polite, honest words.
Lesson 4Prices
Explain that a price is the amount of money asked for goods or services, read and compare prices, explain why prices differ (quality, size, distance, demand), and make a price list.
Lesson 5Needs before wants
Apply the idea of needs before wants to simple spending choices, sort a pretend budget into needs and wants, explain why we plan for needs first, and recognise that choices are respected without judging others.
Lesson 6Saving money
Explain what saving is (keeping some money for later), give reasons to save (a goal, emergencies, future needs), describe safe places to save (at home with an adult, school savings clubs, trusted savings groups, banks), and make a simple saving plan for a small goal with pretend or small amounts.
Lesson 7Spending choices
Describe the choices people make when spending (what to buy, where, when and how much), explain that every choice has trade-offs, compare impulse and planned buying, and make a thoughtful pretend choice with reasons.
Lesson 8Comparing prices
Compare the prices of similar goods at different sellers, identify the best value (price and quality), use simple addition and subtraction to compare totals, and explain why we check before buying.
Lesson 9Planning simple purchases
Plan a simple purchase in steps (identify the need or want, set a limit, compare, decide, buy with an adult, check change and receipt, review), write a shopping list, stay within a pretend limit, and reflect on the plan.
Lesson 10Responsible use of money
Describe responsible use of money (spend wisely, save some, share some, keep it safe, be honest, avoid waste), explain the idea of sharing and giving, and reflect on how our choices affect ourselves and others, with respect for different family situations.
