10 lessons in this unit

Lesson 1

Natural environments

Explain that a natural environment is made by nature (land, water, plants, animals, weather), give examples (forest, river, savannah, ocean), tell natural from human-made features, and describe how living things depend on their environment.

Lesson 2

Built environments

Explain that a built environment is made by people (homes, schools, roads, markets, bridges), compare built and natural environments, describe how built environments meet needs, and explain how they change nature.

Lesson 3

Forest communities

Describe how people live in or near forests (food, wood, medicines, homes, farming), name forest products, explain why forests matter (air, water, habitats), and describe ways to use forests responsibly.

Lesson 4

Coastal communities

Describe how people live on the coast (fishing, salt-making, tourism, ports, boat building), name coastal features (beach, harbour, estuary), explain challenges (storms, erosion) and describe ways to protect coasts.

Lesson 5

Grassland communities

Describe grassland environments (savannah, plains, pasture), explain how people live there (herding, farming, travelling between seasons), name animals and plants, and describe dry-season and rainy-season changes and care of grassland.

Lesson 6

Mountain communities

Describe mountain environments (high, steep, cooler, windy), explain how people live and travel in mountain areas (terraced farming, herding, paths, bridges), name challenges and benefits, and describe how mountain communities care for their land.

Lesson 7

Weather and daily life

Describe common weather (sunny, rainy, windy, cloudy, hot, cold), explain how weather affects clothing, food, travel and play, compare weather in Sierra Leone (rainy and dry seasons) with other places, and make a simple weather chart.

Lesson 8

Housing and environment

Explain that homes differ because of the environment and available materials (mud brick, bamboo, wood, stone, concrete, stilts, thatch), describe how homes protect from weather, and think about safe, sustainable building.

Lesson 9

Adaptation to places

Explain that people adapt to their environment by changing what they wear, eat, build, do for work and how they travel, give examples from different environments (hot, cold, wet, dry, steep), and explain that adapting can also help or harm the environment.

Lesson 10

Environmental responsibility

Explain that people share responsibility for caring for the environment, name simple actions (reduce, reuse, recycle, save water and energy, plant trees, keep places clean), carry out a safe class action, and see that small actions add up.
