10 lessons in this unit
What are rights?
Explain that rights are things every person should have or be able to do (to be safe, to learn, to be healthy, to have a name, to play, to be heard), recognise that children have rights protected by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and link rights to needs.
Lesson 2What are responsibilities?
Explain that responsibilities are duties we have to others and to the community, link each right to a responsibility (right to learn: responsibility to listen), give examples at home, school and community, and recognise that rights and responsibilities go together.
Lesson 3Fair treatment
Explain what fairness means (treating people justly and giving everyone a chance), distinguish fair from unfair in simple situations (sharing, turn-taking, rules applied to all), recognise that fair does not always mean identical, and say what to do about unfairness.
Lesson 4Respect for others
Define respect, show respect in words and actions (polite speech, listening, caring for property, accepting differences), explain why everyone deserves respect, and show respect for people of different ages, abilities, cultures and beliefs.
Lesson 5Helping people
Describe ways children can help others safely (sharing, offering a hand, comforting, helping classmates, helping at home, joining service projects), explain why helping matters, know when to get an adult, and respect others’ choices when helping.
Lesson 6Working in groups
Describe how to work well in a group (share roles, listen, take turns, contribute ideas, encourage others, keep to the task), assign group roles (leader, recorder, timekeeper, reporter), and reflect on group work.
Lesson 7Resolving conflicts peacefully
Explain that conflicts are normal, describe peaceful steps (stop, calm down, say what happened and how you feel, listen, think of solutions, agree), practise with role-play, and know when to get an adult, especially for bullying or harm.
Lesson 8Listening to different opinions
Explain that people can hold different opinions, practise listening to understand (eye contact, no interrupting, repeating back), express opinions politely with reasons, tell fact from opinion, and change their mind when given good reasons.
Lesson 9Community rules
Explain why communities have rules and laws (safety, fairness, order), distinguish rules for home, school and the wider community, describe how rules are made and what happens if they are broken, and suggest a fair rule for a class.
Lesson 10Responsible participation
Explain that responsible participation means taking part in community life in positive ways (voting in class, volunteering, joining clubs, helping at events, speaking up kindly), carry out a simple class decision or project, and reflect on how participation helps the community.
