What is a community?
Learn that a community is a group of people who live, work or play in the same area and share places and rules, name communities we belong to (home, school, neighbourhood), and see that communities can be big or small.
Lesson 2Places in our community
Name common places in a community (home, school, market, clinic, church or mosque, police post, bus stop, park), say what people do in each, and talk respectfully about places of worship.
Lesson 3Homes and buildings
Learn that people live in different types of homes (house, flat, hut, compound, boat house, tent), notice materials (mud, wood, cement, zinc, thatch), describe what a home gives (shelter, safety), and name other buildings.
Lesson 4Roads and pathways
Learn why communities have roads and paths, notice different types (road, path, bridge, footpath, railway), follow basic road safety rules (stop, look, listen, cross with an adult), and recognise simple road signs.
Lesson 5Markets and shops
Learn that markets and shops are places to buy and sell goods, name things sold, distinguish buyer and seller, use simple money ideas, and behave well when shopping.
Lesson 6Health facilities
Learn about health facilities in a community (clinic, health centre, hospital, pharmacy), who works there (doctor, nurse, midwife, pharmacist), when to go for help, simple healthy habits, and why vaccines and hand washing keep communities healthy.
Lesson 7Schools and public places
Learn about public places (schools, libraries, parks, playgrounds, post offices, bus stations) and how they differ from private places, behave well in them, and use them safely.
Lesson 8Community helpers
Name community helpers (teacher, doctor, nurse, farmer, police officer, firefighter, driver, builder, trader, tailor), say what each does, which tools they use, and how they keep communities running.
Lesson 9Community services
Learn that community services are things that the community provides for everyone (water supply, waste collection, fire service, police, health care, schools, electricity, roads), who pays for them, and what happens when a service is missing.
Lesson 10Caring for our community
Learn how children can help care for their community (keep places clean, be kind to neighbours, obey rules, help the old and young, report hazards, welcome newcomers), and plan a small community care action with adults.
