10 lessons in this unit
Why we have rules
Learn that rules and laws help people live together safely and fairly, find rules in games, home, school and community, and tell the difference between a helpful rule and no rule at all.
Lesson 2Rules at home
Identify rules at home (bedtime, washing hands, putting away things, asking permission, safety around fire and water), explain who makes them and why, and talk respectfully about rules that differ between families.
Lesson 3Rules at school
Review and extend school rules (arrival, uniform, speaking, playground, toilets, fire drill), explain who makes them and who they protect, practise a fire-drill walk, and say what happens when rules are not followed.
Lesson 4Rules in public places
Learn rules for public places (on buses, at markets, in places of worship, at clinics, in libraries, at crossings), the reasons for each, and how respect, patience and safety show up in them.
Lesson 5Fairness
Learn that fairness means giving everyone a chance and treating people in the right way, which is not always exactly the same; identify fair and unfair situations; and practise fair sharing and fair play.
Lesson 6Taking turns
Learn why taking turns is fair and kind, practise waiting, sharing and passing, use words such as first, next and last, and handle disappointment when waiting.
Lesson 7Respecting others
Understand respect as treating people and their property with care, practise polite words, listening, and respecting differences and personal space, and know how to say no kindly and what to do if someone is not respectful.
Lesson 8Making good choices
Learn that every day we make choices, and that good choices think about safety, kindness and rules; practise stopping to think, choosing between two options, and talking about what happens next.
Lesson 9Solving simple problems
Learn simple steps for solving small problems with others: stop, calm down, say what the problem is, think of ideas, choose one and try it, and know when to ask a teacher for help.
Lesson 10Being responsible
Understand responsibility as doing our jobs and looking after things and people, identify responsibilities at home and school, explain what happens when jobs are not done, and take pride in finishing tasks.
