About this course
Almost every organisation changes through projects: a new clinic, a software system, a product launch, a road, a training programme. Project Management Fundamentals teaches the discipline that turns those ideas into delivered results, from the first question (“what exactly are we trying to achieve?”) to the final handover.
You will study how projects are defined, how success is measured, how stakeholders are engaged, and how scope, schedule, cost, risk, quality and change are planned and controlled. You will work through realistic simulated cases, perform the calculations that project professionals use (such as critical path, earned value and weighted scoring), and learn to choose between predictive, iterative and agile ways of working.
The course is written for people who are new to project management as well as for team members who already help deliver projects but have never studied the discipline formally. By the end you will be able to produce a structured project management plan and explain the reasoning behind every part of it.
Why take this course
Projects are how change actually happens
Strategies, products, buildings and services all arrive as projects. People who can define, plan and lead them clearly are useful in almost every sector, from health and construction to technology, education and public service.
It rewards clear thinking, not jargon
You will learn the reasoning behind each tool, so you can use it in a real workplace, adapt it, and explain your decisions to managers, clients and teams.
You build something real
The capstone asks you to prepare a project management plan for a project of your choice, giving you a practical piece of work that shows how you think.
What you will be able to do
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Define a project and distinguish it from operations, programmes and portfolios.
- Explain project success in terms of scope, schedule, cost, quality, risk and benefits.
- Select a suitable life cycle and development approach for a given project.
- Identify and analyse stakeholders and plan how to engage them.
- Prepare a business case summary, project charter, requirements list and work breakdown structure.
- Build a project schedule, calculate the critical path and explain schedule compression options.
- Estimate costs, prepare a budget and interpret basic earned value measures.
- Identify, assess and respond to risks, and plan quality and change control.
- Monitor progress, report performance and plan communication.
- Compile a coherent project management plan and justify the decisions in it.
Course overview
Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to deliver a defined change within agreed limits. This course introduces the ideas that are common to the major project management standards and guides, then teaches them step by step with explanations, worked examples and practice.
It is organised in eight modules. Modules 1 to 3 explain what a project is and how it is justified and scoped. Modules 4 to 6 teach planning: schedule, resources, cost, risk, quality and change. Module 7 covers delivery, monitoring, control and communication. Module 8 introduces agile and hybrid approaches, closure and benefits, and ends with a capstone project.
Every lesson contains a Learning Lab with practice questions that explain each answer, and flashcards for revision. Every module ends with an examination and a full set of revision notes.
How you will learn
Short, structured lessons
Each lesson has clear objectives, a full explanation, worked examples, a case study, a practical activity and a summary.
Practice with explained answers
Every question tells you why the right answer is right and why the common wrong answers are tempting.
Exams that find your gaps
Module exams are marked on the server, then point you to the lessons and revision notes you need to revisit.
Revision notes after every exam
A full study note for each module, available whenever you need it.

Assessment and completion
You learn through five kinds of activity: lesson practice questions in the Learning Lab, case studies and practical activities, module examinations, a final course examination, and a capstone project.
- Lesson practice: not graded. Use it to learn. Every answer is explained.
- Module examinations: objective questions are marked on the server. Written questions are compared with a model answer and a marking rubric, which you use to assess yourself honestly. Your weakest topics are linked back to lessons and revision notes.
- Completion standard: complete every lesson, score at least 70% on the auto-marked questions in each module examination, and complete the capstone project.
- Final examination and capstone: planned for release with Module 8.
