Grade 5 Science: Energy and Energy Transfer

Free Grade 5 Science unit on Energy and Energy Transfer: 10 lessons in order, starting with What is energy?. Includes practice questions and answer keys.

10 lessons in this unit

Lesson 1

What is energy?

Learn that energy is the ability to make things happen, that it is measured in joules, that we notice it through its effects, and identify the energy sources people use every day.

Lesson 2

Forms of energy

Learn the main forms of energy, kinetic, potential, thermal, light, sound, electrical, chemical and elastic, find examples of each, and sort everyday objects by the forms they show.

Lesson 3

Energy transfer

Learn that energy moves from one place or object to another by heating, moving, light, sound and electricity, and trace transfers in simple situations such as a hot drink or a bouncing ball.

Lesson 4

Energy transformation

Learn that energy changes from one form to another in transformations, draw energy chains for torches, toasters and falling objects, and show how some energy always becomes wasted heat.

Lesson 5

Heat energy

Learn the difference between heat and temperature, measure temperature safely with thermometers, investigate insulation with a fair test, and explain expansion and heat flow.

Lesson 6

Light energy

Learn that light is energy that travels in straight lines as waves, that it reflects and refracts, that it can be transformed into other energies, and investigate reflection safely with mirrors and torches.

Lesson 7

Sound energy

Learn that sound is energy made by vibrations that travel as waves through solids, liquids and gases but not through a vacuum, and investigate pitch and loudness.

Lesson 8

Electrical energy

Learn that electrical energy flows as current in complete circuits, build safe circuits with 1.5 V cells, compare conductors and insulators, and describe cells, switches and bulbs.

Lesson 9

Energy conservation

Learn the law of conservation of energy, that energy is never created or destroyed but only transferred and transformed, and the everyday sense of saving energy at home and school.

Lesson 10

Energy applications

Learn how people use energy in homes, transport, farming and industry, compare renewable energy technologies such as solar, wind and hydro, and design a small energy-saving solution for school.
