Grade 5 Science: Matter and Its Changes

Free Grade 5 Science unit on Matter and Its Changes: 10 lessons in order, starting with Matter and mass. Includes practice questions and answer keys.

10 lessons in this unit

Lesson 1

Matter and mass

Learn that matter is anything that has mass and takes up space, measure mass accurately with a balance, and show that mass is conserved when matter changes form.

Lesson 2

Properties of matter

Learn to describe materials using properties such as hardness, flexibility, transparency, conductivity, magnetism and solubility, test each safely, and choose materials for jobs.

Lesson 3

Solids, liquids, and gases

Learn the properties of solids, liquids and gases, compare their shapes, volumes and compressibility, and explain changes of state using heating and cooling.

Lesson 4

Particle model introduction

Learn that all matter is made of tiny particles, use the particle model to explain the states of matter, diffusion and expansion, and draw particle diagrams.

Lesson 5

Mixtures

Learn that a mixture is two or more substances not chemically joined, that each keeps its own properties, and sort mixtures into solid-solid, solid-liquid and liquid-liquid types.

Lesson 6

Solutions

Learn that a solution is a special mixture where a solute dissolves evenly in a solvent, describe saturated and dilute solutions, and compare how much solute different solvents can hold.

Lesson 7

Dissolving

Learn the factors that change how fast a solid dissolves, including temperature, stirring and particle size, plan a fair test of one factor, and explain results with the particle model.

Lesson 8

Filtration

Learn how filtration separates an insoluble solid from a liquid using a filter paper or cloth, build a safe filter, and explain why dissolved substances pass through.

Lesson 9

Evaporation and separation

Learn how evaporation recovers a dissolved solid from a solution, how distillation collects pure water, and how chromatography separates coloured inks, and choose the right method for a mixture.

Lesson 10

Reversible and irreversible changes

Learn to classify changes as reversible or irreversible with evidence such as new substances, gas bubbles and colour changes, and explain each using the particle model.
