What Is a Community?

Social Studies · Identity, Family, and Community · Grades 1–3

Meaning at a glance

A community is a group of people who live, work or play in the same area and share things in common.

Also searched as: communities, community helpers, my community.

Understand it simply

A community can be a village, a town, a neighbourhood, a school or a place of worship. The people in a community share a place, and they help and depend on each other.

You belong to more than one community at the same time: your family, your school, your street or village.

See it work

In a village, a farmer grows food, a teacher helps children learn, a nurse looks after sick people and a trader sells goods at the market. No one does everything alone. Together they make the community work.

Avoid this confusion

A community is people and place together. It is not only the buildings. Communities can be small (a class) or large (a city).

Be careful: in science, community has another meaning. It is all the living things in an ecosystem. In social studies it always means people.
