Meaning at a glance
The main idea is what a text is mostly about: the most important point the writer wants you to understand.
Also searched as: main ideas, central idea, what is the passage about.
Understand it simply
When you finish reading, ask yourself: What was this mostly about? The answer is the main idea. It is the big point that holds the whole passage together.
The details are smaller facts that explain or prove the main idea. Clues for finding the main idea are the title, the first and last sentences, and words that repeat.
See it work
Mangrove forests protect the coast. Their thick roots slow down waves, so the shore is not washed away. The roots also give young fish a safe place to grow. People gather wood and oysters from mangroves too.
Main idea: Mangrove forests are helpful. Details: the roots slow waves, the roots shelter young fish, and people gather wood and oysters.
Avoid this confusion
Topic or main idea? The topic is one or two words, like “mangroves”. The main idea is a whole sentence about the topic, like “Mangroves are helpful.”
An interesting detail is not always the main idea. Ask: do the other sentences support it?
