Words to know
one single person
the only one of its kind
to enjoy and honour something good
to be welcome in a group
1. Discover: The class book
Ms Kamara asks each child to bring one page for a class book called “All About Us”. Isatu draws her football. Mei draws her dragon kite. Sorie draws his drum. When all the pages are put together, the book is full of colours and ideas.
Think: What will your page show?
2. Understand: Celebrate us
Idea 1: Unique
Each individual is unique. No one else has your face, your story, your mix of likes and strengths.
Idea 2: Together
When many unique people work together, we can do more. One person is good at drawing, another at singing, another at counting.
Idea 3: Belonging
We celebrate each other and make sure that everyone knows they belong. We say kind things and share our work.
3. Worked examples
Example 1 (I show you): Share my special thing
Tell what makes you special.

- Put them in order.
- Staple them.
Answer: We made a class book.
Did you know?
People who study identity say that each person is a mix of their body, family, culture, experiences and choices, so no two are alike.
Why this matters
When we celebrate each other, everyone feels safe and proud.
4. Explore: All About Us book
Draw one page about what makes you special. Join all the pages into a class book and read it together.
- Draw your page.
- Add your name.
- Join the pages.
- Read the book.
Think about it: what did you notice?
What did you notice? The book was beautiful because every page was different.
5. Practise

If a learner struggles
- Find the misconception: “Being unique means being alone.” Unique people belong together.
- Explain another way: use real objects, pictures or actions first, then words.
- Show a simpler example: Go back to the Me poster from Lesson 1. Add one new thing. Say, “I am special because …”
- Guided practice: work through one example together and let the learner try the next one.
- Reassess: use the quiz again or the worksheet.
- Move on when the learner shows Silver-level evidence independently.
For parents and guardians
In this lesson your child celebrates being special and a member of the class. Unit 1 is now complete. Please praise your child’s page. You do not need to be an expert to help.
- Read the class book if shared.
- Ask “What makes you unique?”
- Celebrate your child.
- Ask “how do you know?” after each answer, and listen.
- Praise effort, not only right answers. Mistakes are how we learn.
- Ten to fifteen minutes a day is better than one long session.
Teacher package
1–5. Objectives, prerequisites, materials, preparation, duration
Lesson objectives. Learners will: say what makes me special; appreciate a classmate; work with the class; review unit ideas.
Prerequisite knowledge. Grade 1 ideas: I am special and I can say my name, my likes and my feelings.
Materials. Paper, crayons, stapler or string. Low-resource options: use chalk or charcoal on a board or wall, drawings in the sand, and objects from the classroom instead of printed materials.
Preparation. Give each child a page.
Suggested duration. 45–60 minutes. It can be split into two shorter sessions.
6–9. Teaching procedure, explanation notes, guided and independent activities
Introduction (5 min). Show a finished class book and ask what makes each page different.
Explanation (10 min). Teach unique and belong.
Guided activity (10 min). Learners draw their pages.
Independent activity (10 min). Class reads together.
Assessment and reflection (5 min). Ask each learner to say one thing they learned and how they know it.
Key questions. What makes me unique? How do we belong?
Teacher explanation notes. Start with a picture, story, map or local example. Then talk about what was seen, then draw and write. Always ask “how do you know?” and invite more than one view. Treat every family, culture and community with respect, and never ask learners to share private information.
10–12. Differentiation, formative assessment, common misconceptions
Support. Use pictures, maps, real objects and short sentences, and let learners work with a partner. Let learners point, show, act or draw instead of writing. Extension. Ask learners to find a new example from their own community and explain how they know.
Formative assessment. Listen to learners read and explain, ask “how do you know?”, and check the independent work.
Misconceptions. “Being unique means being alone.” Unique people belong together.
13–15. Assessment questions, answer keys, marking scheme
Use the quiz, the 10-mark exam practice and the worksheet on this page. All answers and marking guides are in the answer sections above. Re-check every answer before use.
16–19. Remediation, enrichment, homework, teacher reflection
Remediation. Go back to the Me poster from Lesson 1. Add one new thing. Say, “I am special because …” Enrichment. Find one new example near your home or school, draw or write about it and explain it to someone. Homework. See above.
Teacher reflection. After teaching, record: which ideas learners understood; which misconceptions occurred; which activities worked; which learners need more practice; and what to improve next time.
