Grade 4 Social Studies: Environment, Conservation, and Sustainability

Free Grade 4 Social Studies unit on Environment, Conservation, and Sustainability: 10 lessons in order. Includes practice questions and answer keys.

10 lessons in this unit

Lesson 1

Natural environments

Describe natural environments and ecosystems (forests, grasslands, wetlands, rivers, oceans, deserts, mountains, polar regions), explain living and non-living parts, describe simple food chains with producers, consumers and decomposers, define biodiversity, and describe Sierra Leone’s environments (rainforest, savanna, mangroves, rivers, Atlantic coast).

Lesson 2

Human land use

Describe how human land use (farming, settlements, roads, mining, forestry, industry) changes environments, explain impacts such as habitat loss, pollution and loss of soil, describe the positive effects of well-planned land use, introduce the idea of an environmental footprint, and suggest ways to balance needs and nature.

Lesson 3

Deforestation

Define deforestation (clearing forests permanently), explain causes (farming, logging, fuelwood and charcoal, mining, roads, settlement), explain effects (habitat loss, soil erosion, climate effects, loss of resources), describe solutions (protecting forests, reforestation, agroforestry, efficient stoves, community forest management), and describe Sierra Leone’s forests with care.

Lesson 4

Soil erosion

Define soil and topsoil, explain soil erosion by water and wind, describe causes (bare ground, steep slopes, heavy rain, overgrazing, deforestation), describe effects (loss of fertile soil, silted rivers, landslides), and describe prevention methods (cover crops, mulching, terraces, contour planting, trees and grass strips, vetiver grass).

Lesson 5

Water management

Describe the water cycle (evaporation, condensation, precipitation, collection), explain that only a small share of Earth’s water is fresh and easily reachable, describe ways of collecting, storing and treating water (wells, boreholes, rainwater harvesting, dams, treatment), explain water conservation, and explain safe drinking water.

Lesson 6

Waste and pollution

Define waste and pollution, describe types of pollution (air, water, land, noise), explain causes and effects on health and nature, explain how litter can block drains and add to flooding, describe the three Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) and composting, and plan a safe class action to reduce waste.

Lesson 7

Resource conservation

Explain resource conservation (using resources wisely so they last), distinguish fossil fuels from renewable energy (solar, hydro, wind, biomass), explain in plain terms that burning fossil fuels adds to climate change, describe energy and water saving habits, and describe renewable energy in Sierra Leone (Bumbuna hydroelectric power and solar).

Lesson 8

Protected areas

Define protected areas (national parks, reserves, sanctuaries, marine protected areas), explain why they are set up (protect wildlife, habitats, water and heritage), describe examples (Yellowstone, Serengeti, Kruger, and in Sierra Leone Gola Rainforest National Park, Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary and Outamba-Kilimi National Park), explain the role of local communities, and describe visitor rules.

Lesson 9

Sustainable livelihoods

Define sustainable and livelihood, explain how people can earn a living without harming the environment (crop rotation, agroforestry, selective and seasonal fishing, mangrove oyster harvesting, beekeeping, crafts, ecotourism, cooperatives), explain how sustainable livelihoods protect people and nature, and use Sierra Leone examples with respect.

Lesson 10

Environmental action proposal

Plan a safe, realistic environmental action proposal for school or community (such as reducing litter, saving water or energy, planting trees, or starting a school garden), including the problem, evidence, goal, steps, roles, safety, how success will be measured and who must approve it, presented through the teacher.
