Grade 4 Social Studies: Physical Geography and World Regions
Free Grade 4 Social Studies unit on Physical Geography and World Regions: 10 lessons in order. Includes practice questions and answer keys.
10 lessons in this unit
Continents
Name and locate the seven continents (Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia/Oceania, Europe, North America, South America), compare their relative sizes, describe key features of each, locate Sierra Leone in West Africa, and use a globe and world map with a key and compass rose.
Lesson 2Oceans
Name and locate the five oceans (Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, Arctic), compare their sizes and depths, describe ocean currents, resources and uses (fishing, transport, trade, climate regulation), locate the Atlantic Ocean on Sierra Leone’s coast, and explain care for oceans.
Lesson 3Mountains
Describe mountains and mountain ranges, name major examples (Himalayas, Andes, Rockies, Alps, Atlas, Kilimanjaro), including the Loma Mountains and Mount Bintumani in Sierra Leone, explain how mountains affect weather, rivers, farming and travel, and describe mountain safety.
Lesson 4Rivers
Describe a river system (source, tributaries, mouth, delta), name major rivers (Nile, Amazon, Niger, Yangtze, Congo) and Sierra Leone’s rivers (Rokel, Sewa, Moa, Mano, Great and Little Scarcies), explain how rivers are used (water, farming, transport, power) and explain river safety and care.
Lesson 5Plains and valleys
Describe plains, plateaus and valleys, name examples (Great Plains, Indo-Gangetic Plain, the Pampas, the Great Rift Valley, the Nile Valley), explain how they form and why plains and river valleys are good for farming and settlement, and describe Sierra Leone’s coastal lowlands, interior plains and plateau.
Lesson 6Deserts
Define a desert (an area with very little rainfall, usually under 250 millimetres a year), describe hot and cold deserts, name examples (Sahara, Kalahari, Gobi, Arabian, Atacama, Antarctica), explain how plants, animals and people live in deserts, and describe the Harmattan wind that reaches West Africa including Sierra Leone.
Lesson 7Forests
Describe the main types of forest (tropical rainforest, temperate forest, boreal forest), name examples (Amazon, Congo Basin, Southeast Asia, Gola in Sierra Leone), describe the layers of a rainforest and the plants and animals within it, and explain why forests are valuable and need protection.
Lesson 8Climate regions
Distinguish weather from climate, describe the main climate regions (tropical, dry, temperate, continental/cold, polar), explain how latitude, altitude and nearness to the sea affect climate, describe Sierra Leone’s tropical climate with rainy and dry seasons, and read a simple climate graph.
Lesson 9Human settlement patterns
Describe where people live and why (near water, on flat fertile land, in mild climates, near resources and trade routes), explain why some places are crowded and others sparsely populated, describe clustered, linear and scattered settlement patterns, and describe settlement in Sierra Leone with general examples.
Lesson 10Physical geography mapping
Make and read a physical map using a title, key, compass rose, scale and colours for height and water, interpret relief shading, locate physical features of Sierra Leone (coast, Freetown peninsula, rivers, Loma Mountains) and of a world region, and check map accuracy against an atlas.
