What is culture?
Understand that culture is the way of life of a group of people (language, food, clothing, music, celebrations, beliefs, stories), notice cultural features in our own lives, and learn that cultures are different and equally valuable.
Lesson 2Languages people speak
Learn that people speak different languages (Krio, Mende, Temne, English, French, Arabic, Spanish, Mandarin), greet in more than one language, understand that language carries culture, and respect people who speak differently.
Lesson 3Foods and traditions
Explore foods from different cultures and how they are linked to traditions, festivals and places (rice dishes, bread, couscous, noodles, cassava leaves), learn table manners and respect for food rules, and avoid calling any food “strange”.
Lesson 4Clothing and cultural expression
Learn that clothing expresses culture (lappa, gara tie-dye, kente, kaftan, kimono, sari), recognise special clothes for celebrations and uniforms, talk about how we dress for weather and occasions, and respect different ways of dressing.
Lesson 5Music and dance
Explore music and dance as cultural expression (drums, shakers, balafon, singing, call and response, folk dances), take part in a simple rhythm or movement, and learn that music brings people together and tells stories.
Lesson 6Stories and celebrations
Explore stories, folktales and celebrations that communities share (harvest festivals, national days, religious festivals, naming ceremonies, birthdays), understand why people celebrate, and respect that not everyone celebrates the same days.
Lesson 7Family customs
Learn about family customs (greetings, naming, meals together, helping elders, special days), compare similar and different customs among families, and understand that customs show care and values.
Lesson 8Respecting different traditions
Practise respectful behaviour toward traditions that differ from ours: ask politely, listen, do not laugh, do not touch sacred objects, accept that we can disagree kindly, and speak up kindly if someone is disrespectful.
Lesson 9Learning about others
Practise learning about people who are different from us through books, pictures, stories, visitors and polite questions, find similarities as well as differences, and avoid stereotypes (judging all people in a group the same way).
Lesson 10Celebrating our community
Bring together learning about culture by planning and holding a simple class or school celebration of our community, in which every child can take part in a way they choose (a song, a poem, a picture, a dish picture, a greeting), and reflect on what we learned.
