What Is a Habitat?
Science · Life Science and Biology · Grades 1–4
Meaning at a glance
A habitat is the natural place where a plant or animal lives and finds what it needs to survive: food, water, shelter and space.
Also searched as: habitats, natural home, animal home.
Understand it simply
Every living thing needs a place that gives it what it needs. That place is its habitat. A habitat can be big, like a forest or an ocean, or small, like a rotting log or a pond.
A good habitat gives a living thing food, water, shelter and space to live and raise young.
See it work
A fish lives in a river. The river gives it water to breathe in, food to eat and plants to hide in. A camel lives in a hot desert and can go a long time without water. Sierra Leone’s rainforests are habitats for chimpanzees, which find fruit, trees to sleep in and room to move.
Avoid this confusion
A habitat is more than a home. A bird’s nest or a rabbit’s burrow is its shelter. The habitat is the whole area around it, including the food, water and space it uses.
Habitat is also not the same as a place an animal only visits. A habitat is where a living thing normally lives and finds what it needs.
