1. Discover: The healthy week

Akosua makes a plan: 60 minutes of play daily, nine hours of sleep, handwashing before meals, clean water and fruit with every meal. After a month she feels stronger and misses fewer days of school.

Think: Which habit would you add?

2. Understand: Healthy living

Idea 1: Daily habits

Active play, enough sleep (about nine to eleven hours for children), balanced meals and clean water are the base of health.

Idea 2: Hygiene

Hygiene such as washing hands with soap, brushing teeth and covering coughs stops germs spreading.

Idea 3: Avoiding harm

Avoid smoke, harmful substances and unsafe food or water. Ask a trusted adult or health worker for help with health worries.

Remember: Exercise, sleep, hygiene, nutrition and safe choices keep body systems healthy.

3. Worked examples

Example 1 (I show you): Link

Exercise.

  1. Heart.
  2. Muscles.
  3. Bones.

Answer: Exercise strengthens many systems.

Example 2 (We do it together): Link

Handwashing.

  1. Germs.
  2. Illness.
  3. Prevent.

Answer: It stops germs spreading.

Example 3 (You try): Plan

Week.

Show the steps and answer
  1. Play.
  2. Sleep.
  3. Wash.

Answer: A balanced week.

Did you know?

Washing hands with soap for 20 seconds can cut some diarrhoea illnesses by almost half.

Why this matters

Healthy habits last a lifetime and help us learn and play.

4. Explore: My health plan

Make a poster-style plan with a daily timetable showing play, meals, sleep, hygiene and rest, then compare with a partner.

  1. List habits.
  2. Make a timetable.
  3. Add reasons.
  4. Share with a partner.
Think about it: what did you notice?

What did you notice? Each habit helped at least one body system.

Safety first: Do not copy habits that harm health. Ask a trusted adult for health questions. Practise handwashing with clean water. Respect each person’s plan.

5. Practise

Say it in a sentence

Use these starters when you talk about the lesson. Say them out loud.

  • ___ is keeping clean to stay healthy.
  • ___ is the rest the body needs.
  • ___ strengthens the body.
  • A ___ is how a person lives.

Mastery and remediation

Objective Bronze (Developing) Silver (Proficient) Gold (Advanced)
O1 List healthy habits Shows this with help from an adult or a picture Does this independently and explains how they know Explains it clearly and uses it in a new situation
O2 Explain how each helps Shows this with help from an adult or a picture Does this independently and explains how they know Explains it clearly and uses it in a new situation
O3 Link to systems Shows this with help from an adult or a picture Does this independently and explains how they know Explains it clearly and uses it in a new situation
O4 Make a plan Shows this with help from an adult or a picture Does this independently and explains how they know Explains it clearly and uses it in a new situation

Courseversity badge thresholds (overall quiz score): Gold = 90–100%; Silver = 80–89.9%; Bronze = 70–79.9%. A badge is never a full record of progress.

If a learner struggles

  1. Find the misconception: “Sleep is wasted time.” Body repairs.
  2. Explain another way: use real objects, pictures or actions first, then words.
  3. Show a simpler example: Plan healthy living.
  4. Guided practice: work through one example together and let the learner try the next one.
  5. Reassess: use the quiz again or the worksheet.
  6. Move on when the learner shows Silver-level evidence independently.

For parents and guardians

In this lesson your child plans healthy habits. You do not need to be an expert to help.

  • Make a family routine.
  • Ask “What helps our health?”
  • Wash hands together.
  • Ask “how do you know?” after each answer, and listen.
  • Praise effort, not only right answers. Mistakes are how we learn.
  • Ten to fifteen minutes a day is better than one long session.

Teacher package

1–5. Objectives, prerequisites, materials, preparation, duration

Lesson objectives. Learners will: list healthy habits; explain how each helps; link to systems; make a plan.

Prerequisite knowledge. Grade 4 ideas: the skeleton, muscles, teeth, digestion basics, the heart and healthy habits.

Materials. Poster paper, markers. Low-resource options: use chalk or charcoal on a board or wall, drawings in the sand, and objects from the classroom instead of printed materials.

Preparation. Gather paper.

Suggested duration. 45–60 minutes. It can be split into two shorter sessions.

6–9. Teaching procedure, explanation notes, guided and independent activities

Introduction (5 min). Ask, “What did you do today for your health?”

Explanation (10 min). Teach healthy living.

Guided activity (10 min). Learners plan.

Independent activity (10 min). Learners share.

Assessment and reflection (5 min). Ask each learner to say one thing they learned and how they know it.

Key questions. Which habit? Which system?

Teacher explanation notes. Start with real objects and safe, hands-on observation. Then talk about what was seen, then draw and write. Always say “how do you know?”. Keep to the safety notes, and use local, safe materials.

10–12. Differentiation, formative assessment, common misconceptions

Support. Use real objects and pictures, short sentences and a partner. Let learners point, show or draw instead of writing. Extension. Ask learners to find a new example at home and explain how they know.

Formative assessment. Listen to learners read and explain, ask “how do you know?”, and check the independent work.

Misconceptions. “Sleep is wasted time.” Body repairs.

13–15. Assessment questions, answer keys, marking scheme

Use the quiz, the 10-mark exam practice and the worksheet on this page. All answers and marking guides are in the answer sections above. Re-check every answer before use.

16–19. Remediation, enrichment, homework, teacher reflection

Remediation. Plan healthy living. Enrichment. Look for one new example near your home or school, draw it and explain it to someone. Homework. See above.

Teacher reflection. After teaching, record: which ideas learners understood; which misconceptions occurred; which activities worked; which learners need more practice; and what to improve next time.
