A numeral is not a picture of a quantity; it is an instruction for building one. In the base-ten system each place is worth ten times the place to its right, so the digit 5 contributes 5 in the units column, 50 one column left, and 500 the column after that. The digits are a small fixed alphabet of ten symbols, and position does the rest of the work. This is why 105 and 1050 use the same symbols but name different quantities.
Zero is what makes the system function. It is not “nothing” in a numeral — it is a placeholder that keeps every other digit in its correct column. Writing 105 without the zero gives 15, and the 1 has silently slid from the hundreds to the tens. Systems without a positional zero, such as Roman numerals, need a new symbol for each magnitude and cannot express large numbers compactly or support column arithmetic.
The same rule continues to the right of the decimal point, where each place is worth one tenth of the place before it. That is the whole content of decimals: there is no separate “decimal system” to learn, only the base-ten rule continued past the units column. Recognising this early prevents the common belief that decimals obey different rules from whole numbers.
Reading, comparing and estimating · 10 min
To compare two whole numbers, compare their lengths first: more digits means a larger number, provided there are no leading zeros. If the lengths match, compare digit by digit from the left and stop at the first difference. This left-to-right habit is faster and less error-prone than scanning the whole numeral, and it generalises directly to decimals once you align the decimal points.
Rounding replaces a number with a nearby one that is easier to hold and communicate. Look at the digit immediately to the right of the place you are rounding to: 5 or more rounds up, less than 5 rounds down. The purpose is not to be vague but to be appropriately precise — a population of 8,043,112 is usually more usefully reported as about 8 million.
Estimation is the practical payoff of place value. Rounding each number to its leading digit and computing mentally gives you an order-of-magnitude check on any calculation. If a bill of 48 items at 19 each returns 91.20, an estimate of 50 × 20 = 1000 tells you instantly that a decimal point has gone astray. Professionals estimate first and calculate second.
Place Value in Practice
Each column is worth ten times the column to its right; the rule does not stop at the decimal point.
- Compare numbers from the left, not the right — the first differing digit settles it, and you can stop there.
- A longer decimal is not a larger decimal. 0.099 has more digits than 0.7 and is far smaller; align the points before comparing.
- Estimate before you calculate. An order-of-magnitude check catches the misplaced decimal point that an exact calculation will happily produce and not flag.

Catch the misplaced decimal
Find five real prices or quantities from a receipt, a news article or a product page. For each, write a one-step estimate using only leading digits before you calculate anything exactly. Then compute the exact value. Record any case where your estimate and the exact answer differ by more than a factor of two, and work out which digit or decimal point caused it. The habit being built is estimating first and calculating second — this is how errors are caught in practice.
